The week of October 30th, 2017, has been nothing if not a veritable news whirlwind. Donald Trump’s Twitter got shut down for a blessed 11 minutes, Beyonce was cast as Nala in the upcoming The Lion King remake, and Jelena— Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber— ARE DATING AGAIN. Obviously the most important world event that went down this week.
But how did this all come to be? Wasn’t Selena just dating the Weeknd? Does this have anything to do with Bieber’s horrific new stomach tattoo? What happened in between their first date in 2009 to right now? Read on.
December 2009: Justin serenades Selena during a New Year’s Eve performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special. You could tell it’s 2009 because Justin’s hair is shaped like a Vespa scooter helmet.
December 2010: Jelena hold hands in a Philadelphia IHOP. They each tell media outlets their relationship is purely platonic. “It was just pancakes!” Selena told Us Weekly.
January 2011: 16-year-old Justin and 18-year-old Selena make out on a private yacht in St. Lucia.
February 2011: Jelena makes their first public appearance as a couple at the Vanity Fair Oscar party. He matches his handkerchief to her dress and they make out some more in a photo booth.
September 2011: Bieber reportedly rents out the whole of the Staples Center arena so the couple could watch Titanic uninterrupted. He tweets: “Romance isn’t dead. Treat your lady right fellas,” making preteens around the world swoon with envy.
November 2011: Justin is named in a paternity suit amid swirling breakup and cheating rumors. The suit is later dropped.
February 2012: Selena posts a since-deleted picture to her Instagram of the diamond-studded “J” ring gifted to her by Biebs. She captioned the picture of her V-day gift: “I’m finally home :).”
October 2012: Justin posts then deletes a photo captioned “Lingse.” Fans quickly deduce this is an anagram of the word “single.”
November 2012: JELENA BREAKS UP. For the first time. Justin may or may start briefly dating Victoria’s secret model Barbara Palvin.

January 2013: Selena confirms the breakup on her Twitter account on New Year’s Day.
New beginnings. Fresh start. I love you all 🙂

Then later that month she posts a photo of herself wearing a Stratford Culltions hat, repping Justin’s hometown hockey team.

April 2013: Justin posts a black and white photo on Instagram captioned “You’ve been makin music for too long babe come cuddle – her.” He then instantly deletes it, but not before fans screencap and share it across social media.
May 2013: The famous Taylor Swift grossed out tongue gif surfaces when she catches Selena and Justin reuniting and kissing backstage at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.

July 2013: Selena’s song “Love Will Remember,” is about her relationship with Justin.
October 2013: Justin’s single “Heartbreaker,” includes the lyrics “I still believe in love/ I still believe in us,” is clearly about his relationship with Selena.
January 2014: Justin kicks off the year with this photo captioned “Love the way you look at me.” He then goes full throttle bad boy and gets arrested for drunk driving, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license. Selena checks into rehab for lupus.
July 2014: Biebs gets into a fistfight with Orlando Bloom. Some speculate it was over Selena, because she was romantically linked to Bloom. Others say it was over Miranda Kerr, because Justin at one point posted then deleted a sexy pic of her on his IG.
October 2014: Jelena gets into an argument in France. Selena tweets this breakup message and unfollows Beibs on Instagram. He unfollows her the following month.

December 2014: Justin responds to rumors he’s dating Hailey Baldwin.
2015: The couple isn’t together. They attend the Met Gala separately. Justin continues to post pictures of Selena on his Instagram. Drake is confused.

They each consistently tell a bunch of media outlets how much they care for/respect one another. Justin’s single “Where R U Now” includes a graffiti’d wall which reads “Where R [U] Now, Selena?”
Selena is super over everyone only talking about her relationship with Beibs.
