If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, chances are, you also liked Harry Potter. Both series are based on best-selling novels by incredible writers and explore the world of mystical magic (obvs. Harry Potter does more, but you know what I mean).
On the Season 7 premiere episode of Game of Thrones, I couldn’t help but realize how many Harry Potter references were made. While some caught them – I’m sure some people may have missed them.
For one – the maester who Samwell Tarly was speaking to at the Citadel is none other than Professor Slughorn – played by Jim Broadbent. Besides having the same actor playing a similar-ish role in the series, a pretty identical story line was used.
If you’ve ever seen Harry Potter and Half Blood Prince – you’d know Tom Riddle (aka Voldemort) needed access to the restricted part of the Hogwarts Library in order to learn more about horcruxes. He asked Professor Slughorn for permission – in which he was denied.
And, in the Season 7 premiere of Game of Thrones – Samwell Tarly finds himself in a similar situation. Actually, identical.
While some people didn’t quite catch the reference – others were on top of it.
Imagine having a coveted role in two separate beloved series and you have lines about the restricted section of the library in both.

Lol at Sam asking Professor Slughorn for access to the restricted section without bringing him crystallized pineapple. Idiot #GameOfThrones

Clearly no one left Sam an invisibility cloak to get into the restricted section of the library (you know you were thinking it) #GoTS7
