Demi Lovato is sorry not sorry she bounced right on out of the 2016 Met Gala…to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The Grammy nominee sat down for a refreshingly candid interview with Billboard, revealing she “had a terrible experience” at the event and felt so awkward it almost drove her to the bottle again.
“This one celebrity was a complete b**** and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink.”
While Lovato doesn’t mention any names, the identity of the celebrity is not difficult to guess. A photograph of the 25-year-old alongside designer and friend Jeremy Scott went viral that year, and not because of her incredible Moschino dress. Rapper Nicki Minaj stands to the left of the frame throwing Lovato some S E R I O U S shade.
The photo, posted on Lovato’s Instagram the day after the Met Gala was captioned: “This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met #cool #sof—ingawkward #notforme #sweatpants #forensicfiles #whatsgood,”
Her last hashtag, of course, refers to Nicki’s infamous VMAs exclamation, “Miley, what’s good?” Lovato later amended the caption, adding: “p.s. some of y’all need to learn how to take a joke.. I’m obviously laughing at the fact that 1. I look incredibly awkward and 2. That the shade being thrown in this picture actually gives me life.”
Luckily, she never did go have that drink.
The singer-songwriter— who has been sober for six years— explained that as she left the Met Gala she texted her manager and headed straight to a 10pm AA meeting.
“I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds — millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting. And I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala — fake and sucking the fashion industry’s d**k.”
Though there are some shade-throwers in Hollywood, there are also some true pals. Lovato named Ariana Grande as one of them.

“The people that aren’t willing to chill with you at home are the type of people that just want to be seen with you. When Ariana Grande and I hang out, it’s super chill. One time I went over to her place. She had never heard of the Charles Manson murders. We were spooking ourselves out!”
Lovato also named Iggy Azalea as a real one:

“She’s super low-key; she doesn’t drink or party. She has struggled a lot. ‘No money, no family, 16 in the middle of Miami.’ That lyric explains a lot of her story. She’s very outspoken, and sometimes it can turn people off. But that’s one of the reasons I love her. She’s not the type of person who lies to you.”
So there you have it. Hollywood is basically high school 2.0.
