On the Game of Thrones Season Finale, Sam made it all the way to Winterfell and met up with Bran Stark, looking for his BFF, Jon Snow. When the two met, they had a conversation about Jon’s true heritage and identity, finding out that he is not Jon Snow but really, Aegon Targaryen.
Bran, at first, thought Jon was still a bastard – as he thought the relationship between his Aunt Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen was illegitimate. But, if you recall in Episode Five of Season Seven, Gilly figured out that Rhaegar had “annulled” his marriage previously to have a secret ceremony with Lyanna Stark in Dorne – and we were all mind blown that Sam dismissed her questions and discovery.
But, when Bran said something about Jon being a bastard – Sam immediately said he read and transcribed the diary of High Septon Maynard – which, is where Gilly got the information. So, he basically stole Gilly’s thunder.
And, fans were not happy.
