Bhad Bhabie (otherwise known as Danielle Bregoli, the “Cash Me Outside” girl) is being accused of “blackfishing” after posting a video to social media in which her skin looks like it has been darkened. Whether she achieved the skin darkening by a tan, a filter, makeup, who knows—she certainly isn’t looking like her old self.
Blackfishing, which is the practice in which white people present themselves as black or appearing to have African ancestry. Some people consider it “the modern equivalent of blackface or brownface, because it capitalizes off the ‘exotic’ looks of historically oppressed minorities. Social media influencers like Kim Kardashian and maybe every one of her sisters have been accused of blackfishing in the past by wearing long braids or a weave.
17-year-old Bregoli, who infamously cursed on Dr. Phil, has been posting pictures of herself on Instagram wearing cornrows and weaves for quite awhile now. But this is the first time her skin has looked definitively darker.
Bregoli’s physical transformation is not winning her any new fans on social media, with many people criticizing her “new look.”
But Bregoli doesn’t seem to be listening to the criticism. “Aww I’m trending. Thank you,” she wrote on Instagram.
Look, we’re all going a little stir crazy and maybe some of us are really bored. But maybe bake some bread instead of go blackfishing?
