When you think of Dolly Parton and her long, successful career as a country singer, there is no possible way you can not think of her hit song, “Jolene.” Even 40 years after its release, the song still pops into our heads and stays there for quite some time.
While listening to the lyrics allows us all to easily understand what Parton is singing about–someone trying to steal her man–many people don’t know that the song is based on actual events in her life. Parton has said in the past that the song was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk that had flirted with her husband at their local bank branch. The name “Jolene” apparently comes from a young fan who came on stage for an autograph at her show.
I wrote that years ago when my husband… was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be. I put a stop to that. I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry. Had it not been for that woman I would never have written ‘Jolene’ and I wouldn’t have made all that money, so thank you, Jolene.
While the song is pretty dated (as in, it came out in 1974), the meaning still reigns true for virtually anyone in a relationship–sometimes, women will try to come flirt with your man, it happens. But, there is nothing that relates to “Jolene” more than the meme that Dolly Parton herself posted on Twitter this week.
I give you–the ’70s and millennials coming together as one.

Absolutely amazing. Clearly, our girl Dolly is pretty up on her meme game–and we couldn’t be prouder. Twitter, of course, loves it.
