If you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War, then you are probably feeling a lot of complicated feelings right now — and if you haven’t seen it, then beware, for there are spoilers ahead!
So, the end of Infinity War was pretty traumatic, regardless of how invested you are in the Marvel franchise. Watching Thanos’ rapture take effect on a handful of beloved characters was both surprising and a bit disturbing. However, watching Groot disappear right in front of Rocket was easily one of the most heartbreaking moments of the unsettling mass evaporation.
Recently, writer/director James Gunn shed some light on the Groot situation — and managed to break everyone’s heart in the process.
First, Gunn revealed that Baby Groot is pretty much Rocket’s son, since he is, in fact, a new Groot.
First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.

A fan then asked for the translation of Groot’s last line in the movie.
@JamesGunn Might be too soon to ask this, but do you know what Groot’s last line is at the end of the movie?

Gunn’s response pretty much destroyed everyone.
