A Teacher Assigned Homework Asking Kids To Give ‘3 Good Reasons For Slavery’

Administrators at a private Christian school in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin were forced to issue an apology on Wednesday after four-grade children were given a homework assignment asking them to list “3 ‘good’ reasons for slavery and 3 bad reasons.”

Trameka Brown-Berry, whose 9-year-old son Jerome is in the class, told Fox 6 that she was in “shock” over the “highly offensive and insensitive” assignment, and shared it on Facebook asking whether others found it to be so as well. “Not only was my son in an awful position, but the students who weren’t black ― that’s what keeps racism going,” Brown-Berry told the news station. “I couldn’t believe they sent something like that home.”

3 cheers for Jerome, whose perfect response to the first part of the assignment reads: “I feel there is no good reason for slavery that’s why I did not write.” Atta boy.

Principal Jim Van Dellen apologized to parents soon afterwards, stating that the teacher had neglected to properly describe the task to student. Van Dellen and principal senior pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Andrew Steinke issued the following letter:
