6 Real Things That Happen When You Move Home After College

Because this doesn’t have to be the worst thing to happen, even if it might not be the most exciting.

The end of college comes in the blink of an eye for any student. Before you know it, you’ve gone from your first class with freshman icebreakers, to posing for graduation pictures. It’s a weird time that leaves a lot of people feeling like “the good ole days” have come and gone – especially if you’re moving back home with mom and dad.

It’s not easy, it’s definitely a little awkward – and from experience – it can feel like someone is raining on your independent parade that you just spent the last few years making for yourself. But moving home is just a new reality and any reality has its perks, and its downfalls sometimes. I’m here to talk about it all.

1. You might figure out what you REALLY want in life.

Sometimes I think we need to go home. And by that I mean, sometimes I think it’s a good thing to be reminded of where you came from – especially when you’re thinking about who you’re trying to be next. Sometimes when we’re faced with a million new opportunities they seem really cool and really fun but they might not be what’s in your heart. Being home and reentering yourself gives you the perfect opportunity to see who you are now and how that relates to who you might have always wanted to be as a kid growing up. Moving home can get you to that perfect balance of who was I then and who am I now.

2. You will be reminded of your past, whether it’s good or bad.

College gives you this whole new world and life and friendships that seem a million worlds away from the life you had before. It’s awesome and it’s liberating – but it can also suck if you have any baggage that hasn’t been sorted through living under your roof or in your hometown. Maybe your friend group broke up and everyone’s awkward, maybe you’ll run into an ex or maybe your family dynamic is a little f*cked up. Moving home might seem like a drag because of this or feel like a step backward, but if you take this time to sort through that stuff – you’ll be more than ready for the next chapter when it comes.
