On the latest episode of Game of Thrones from Season 7 – a lot went down. We saw a powerful team of women planning battle tactics (say preach), the Red Woman came back into our lives, Arya found out her family is back in power at Winterfell and – Theon Greyjoy basically broke everyone’s heart.
While people were so focused on the bigger scenes in the show – like Grey Worm and Missandei getting down (kind of?), they may have missed this vital conversation between Samwell Tarly and Archmaester Marwyn – about, well books.
Archmaester Marwyn says to Sam –
“If you’re going to write histories, Tarly, you have to do the research. If you want people to read your histories, you need a bit of style. I’m not writing, A Chronicle of the Wars of Following the Death of King Robert I so it can sit on a shelf unread.'”
Sam’s face is – well – unimpressed and a bit disturbed, obviously not loving Archmaester Marwyn’s choice in title.
“What? You don’t like the title? What would you call it then?”
Cue Sam, the sensitive, adorable, teddy-bear saying –
“Mm, possibly something a bit more poetic?”
But – shut down.
“We’re not poets, Tarly.”
Well – if one were to write a book of all the wars that follow the death of King Robert (hello, Cersei’s ex-husband aka not father to her children) wouldn’t that just be Game of Thrones within itself? Since, I mean, Robert died in Season 1 and there’s been 7 seasons since – meaning, everything is a post-Robert occurrence.
And – this conversation opened up another conversation (off screen) confirming some people’s theories about Game of Thrones in its entirety. According to Reddit – people long have believed that Game of Thrones (aka A Song of Ice and Fire, the book the show is based off of) is a retelling of events by none other than Samwell Tarly, our favorite book worm.
Now – what is a more poetic name than A Song of Ice and Fire?
Nothing.
And – according to George R.R. Martin, the author of the original books, he believes he’s most like Sam out of all the Game of Thrones characters, saying –
“I would probably be Samwell Tarly. I love Sam, too. He’s a great character. Tyrion might be who I want to be, but Sam is probably closer to who I actually am. The fat kid who likes to read books and doesn’t like to go up a lot of stairs.”
